Eastern Health Shared Services Summary Eastern Health Shared Services is pioneering shared services provision within the Irish Health Service. In this case study, chief officer Valerie Judge explains why imbuing pride and professionalism into the shared services staff has been critical to delivering both service excellence and cost effectiveness. Introduction A 2003 report into restructuring the health service in the Republic of Ireland recommended the creation of a national shared services organization. Such a body would free agencies to concentrate on their core business of delivering healthcare, the report stated. The recommendation was based on the successes of Eastern Health Shared Services (EHSS). Based in Dublin and with 450 employees, EHSS provides a range of "back office' services to the three area health boards of the Eastern Regional Health Authority: East Coast, Northern and South Western, which collectively account for about 20 per cent of the Irish Health Service employees. Shared services provisions focus on: Architectural Services, Property Services, Financial Services, Information and Communications Technology, Procurement and Material Management, and Employee Services. With 210 employees, Employee Services provides a comprehensive range of corporate and employee focused services such as recruitment, payroll, training procurement, occupational health, library services, development of HR system and infrastructure and super-annuation.
